Get to know writer E Michael Lunsford:

1. What is your stage play about?

Scary, Scary Night is a quirky Halloween comedy about chasing your dreams and overcoming your fears.

2. Why should this stage play be produced?

Actually, this play will be produced, in the Fall of 2016, by the Shawnee Playhouse in Shawnee on the Delaware, PA, after receiving rave reviews from a partial staged reading and winning their annual festival competition.

3. This story has a lot going for it. How would you describe this story in one sentence?

As Prudence and Derek start Halloween by arriving late at the costume store, they’re unaware that the evil store manager has a dead body he needs to offload, that he decides to stash it in the local funeral home run by Derek’s somewhat kooky parents, Jeremy and Formalda Hyde.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

The Red Shoes Ballet

5. This is a very tight, emotionally engaging and fun stage play. How long have you been working on this play?

From mid-2012 through 2014, 2½ years

6. How many stories have you written?

37 ½

7. What motivated you to write this play?

I grew up listening to musicals, and always dreamed of writing a musical comedy. One day it struck me that there’s a gap in the theatre world: no musicals focused on Halloween. After I wrote the book, music and lyrics for 21 songs, an astute creative director told me the script was so funny, it could easily stand alone as a non-musical comedy that would be appreciated by theatres not equipped to stage a complete musical.

8. What obstacles did you face to finish this play?

My own doubts. Everything else to do with finishing this play was surprisingly easy to overcome.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about composing music and inventing (I have 27 patents).

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

When I first read about the WILDsound festival, it seemed a perfect place to submit my play, especially since winning the competition would mean a full staged reading by professional actors. I was grateful for the praise in the initial feedback, but stung at first by the criticisms that included suggestions for improvement. After a couple of days, though, I had to admit that the critique was correct, and I should make the changes suggested. Now the comedy is even funnier, and I have WILDsound to thank for that.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Three tips:
1. Forget “Just Do It!” Make a sign for your desk that reads, “Just Start it!”
2. In the words of James Thurber, “Don’t get it right, just get it written.”
3. Submit your work everywhere you can, even if there’s a submission fee.
