Mystery Novels are a very young genre compared to the rest. They have only been around for the last 200 years. Perhaps the correlation is that was when police forces started to turn up in cultures when certain cities began to over-populate and there was soon a need for an organization to help solve the rampant crime sprees that were occurring.
Very quickly, these who-done-it type of stories became the more popular genres. In the beginning, most mystery novels were focused on a detective trying to solve a crime or murder of some sort. These days, mysteries can cover a lot of territory, especially the supernatural which can lead us into uncharted worlds and imaginations.
The peak of mystery novels hit in the 1930s and 1940s with the pulp magazines. Today, you’ll always see at least 1 mystery genre novel on the Best Sellers List.
