WILDsound Matthew Toffolo interviews writer David M. Hyde:

Matthew: What is your screenplay about?

David: A local politician has one thing on his mind, to win the election, until he crashes his car into a fireworks stand and everything blows apart.

Matthew: Why should this script be made into a movie?

David: The Fireworks Stand fun, family entertainment that addresses, in alight hearted way, our culture’s misconception about what success really is.

Matthew: How long have you been writing stories?

I have been writing stories for at least thirty years. I have been specifically focusing on screenplays for the last three years.

Matthew: What movie have you seen the most in your life?

David: The movie I have seen the most would be It’s A Wonderful Life, although my favorite movie is probably Waking Ned Divine.

Matthew: What artists would you love to work with?

David: I have a tremendous respect for Morgan Freeman, both as an actor and a person. I wrote the part of Marvin Temple with many of Mr. Freeman’s characters in mind.

Matthew: How many stories/screenplays have you written?

David: Not counting works in progress, I have written two screenplays. The Fireworks Stand was my first. I have two other projects in process and a file drawer full of future ideas.

Matthew: Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

David: Sitting at my desk, writing.

Matthew: Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

David: I prefer to write in the mornings. If my schedule allows, I will typically write from 8-1 and then take a break until evening when I will edit. With three kids at home, instrumental music with noise canceling headphones is an essential element.

Matthew: Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

David: My passion is to use the gifts God has given me to make a difference in the world, wherever that opportunity may arise.

Matthew: Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

David: Learn your craft and follow your passion (in that order).
