Get to know Poet Toyin S Ajimati:

1) What is the theme of your poem?

The theme of my poem is the remembrance of the hundreds to thousands of men , women and children that died while being transported across sea on ships for sale across various parts of the world from the Continent of Africa .

2) How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

I would like people to just respond in a positive way with intrigue of what I have written , even though it is not the only time unfortunately that we humans beings have enslaved another group of fellow humans , it is a story that I feel is overshadowed . I feel that a lot of people just think that those of African descent or those that acknowledged are ancestors of slaves or uncivilized human beings.

3) How long have you been writing poetry?

I have been writing poetry since I was about 9 or 10 years old , it started out with writing to capture the hearts of girls I had crushes on in elementary school . I was never successful in getting the girl to be my girlfriend but I always got compliments for my writing ..lol

4) Do you have a favorite poet?

I have been asked that question and I honestly do not have a favorite poet , , I have read some work from Langston Hughes , W.E.B Dubois a bit of Mark Twain and others but much of writing is from the world around me as I see and feel it , past , present and future .

5) What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

What influenced me to submit was that fact that the festival showcased poetry and my past experience with the festival was a good one .

6) Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I wrote passages , slogans , and have recently taken a script writing class about 1.5 , a short story writing class this year and a song -writing class .

7) What is your passion in life?

My passion in life is to attain moments of ”greatness” more than negative ones. I feel I have many regrets from my past and want to minimize those as much possible moving forward,
