Today Poetry Reading by Gene Cartwright

Read Poetry Reading of TODAY:

Poem read by Holly Sarchfield

Get to know Poet Gene Cartwright:

1) What is the theme of your poem?

I suppose the theme is: pause to reflect. I want to highlight the importance of leaving the beaten path, and reflecting upon the small treasures in life we often overlook.

2) How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

I would not want to prescribe a response, except to encourage each person to feel each word, personalize them, and create their own images.

3) How long have you been writing poetry?

I am the author of 8 novels, and a book of poetry, “Still Dreaming”. My mother taught me to read when I was three. I wrote my first poem in 1st grade; wrote my first novel at age12 (longhand), and still remember the full story.

4) Do you have a favorite poet?

That’s tough, so I’m going to cheat a little: Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, James Weldon Johnson, Edgar Allan Poe, Langston Hughes…

5) What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

With respect to my poem, ‘Today,’ it was my desire to share what was a very special day in my life—a day that inspired the poem written at the end of that very same day. ‘Today’ is really my diary of that day, in its entirety.

6) Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I am a novelist, former electrical engineer, an inventor, former Oprah guest, and most importantly—a father. I have 9 books published; three in progress, have seven feature screenplays and three film shorts.

7) What is your passion in life?

There’s so much to do, and so little time—despite one’s length of days. My passion is my writing. I would write, even if there were no readers in the world.
