The Abandoned, Poem by Wes Burton

Genre: FUNERAL/CEMETERY

The Abandoned by Wes Burton

Slabs of moss-encrusted
marble loll along a forgotten trail.
Faded engravings of
long-gone names –
sandy to the touch –
lie beneath
the forrest
shade
on an Oakinfested
hill
below a graveyard.
Mounds of tombstones –

    hundreds –

some yet to die,
cosigned to oblivion,
thrown down
the steep bank
beside the lapping
spring river.
The sound
of distant machinery
whirrs overhead.

White marble –
derelict and cold.
