WOMEN TRY TOO HARD by Chris Savage King

Women try too hard
I am touched by our solemn sentries
At yoga class
That’s only the start
Before the acres of personal development
to be accomplished
like well behaved maidens of previous centuries
that are never quite enough
that are neer finished
So many shortcomings and flaws
to overcome
So many new ones invented
just to be pleasing

Some are fun
Threading, braiding
Some are pleasurable
Some are chores
Haircuts, depilation
Some are just punishing
The point at which it hurts
Involving the kind of weapons – knives, needles
That in other contexts would count as self harm
Another fault to overcome

Never enough
None of them loved enough
Following the sick exhortations
Of vicious little prom queens
They’d hate in real life
If they met them
It’s not for men
This proud embrace of appearance
its tricky accomplishments
Who meanly or not, manage with one all purpose ‘I’ll try not to drink so much this month’ crewcut
on a mission
to find women, often,
a bit like the ones they disappointed in the past
they couldn’t live up to either

I remember the women in Barcelona
Knocking back brandies and laughing in the middle of the afternoon
Quality of skin done and dusted by gene pool
Not giving a shit
Fully evolved
And using commerce
Not being its dupes
