Watch the 140 Character Short Story: A RITE OF PASSAGE:

Get to know writer Ethan Greenwood:

1) What is your very short story about?

It’s about hope coming out of terrible tragedy, that a person can still enjoy their graduation, even though it was denied to them purely for racist reasons many years earlier. It’s also about the fact that life doesn’t have to lose its pleasure just because your old which is why I wanted Sara to sound like an excited young woman graduating today

2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?

I saw the competition advertised on Twitter. At first I was nervous to enter given the difficulty of writing a 140 character short story but once I watched Actors/actresses read the previous winners I was really inspired by how poignant some of them were. The idea just came to me. Subconsciously I wanted to get across the idea of the monumental injustice of what the Nazis did. Of course denying someone a degree was probably the least of their crimes but I also wanted it to have a redeeming quality that despite the cruelty, Sara as an elderly person could still enjoy her rightful graduation, with the same pleasure as any young person might today, which is why I wanted to trick whoever hears it performed, into believing that Sara is just any other young person graduating from college today.

3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Breakfast Club

4) How many scripts and stories have you written?

Around five or six

5) What artists would you love to work with?

Kevin Spacey, Bryan Cranston, Julianne Moore
