Get to know writer Sebastian Halford:

1. What is your novel about?

My novel is about a young dragon who is forced to flee when the lair he shares with his mother comes under attack. Sanctuary lies in a small community of humans nestled in the foothills of a vast and towering mountain range, where the young dragon’s father serves as guardian.

2. Why should this novel be read by anyone?

I wanted to write a book where dragons are integral to the story – front and center, so to speak, and not in the periphery. If this sounds appealing, give it a try, you might like. And if you don’t, well, that means you might have a book in you that could be better. We’ve all had that “I could write a better book than this!” moment, so go after it!

3. How would you describe this story in one sentence?

A story about loyalty amongst friends and family.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Tough call – either Predator or Aliens

5. How long have you been working on this novel?

Three years

6. How many stories have you written?

This is my first complete story, and it’s not really complete – I’m working on book II as I write this. The story continues!

7. What motivated you to write this novel?

I’ve been lost in my own imagination since I was a kid. I would watch a film or read a story and think about how it could have been made better. I had always felt I had a story in me, and so I picked a subject that would keep me writing. I WANT to see how this story ends, so I keep writing to find out.

8. What obstacles did you face to finish this novel?

To complete the story – mental exhaustion, time and finances. Bills must be paid, so my little story about dragons would have to take a back seat to more pressing matters, and when I did find time to work on it, I was often exhausted. Also – I had to decide how much money I should invest. I may never see a dime from this book, and that’s okay (although I certainly wouldn’t mind writing about dragons at home in my pajamas and getting paid), so I put in just enough to get it out there.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Being a dad to my two daughters, my personal relationship with Jesus, skiing and CrossFit.

10. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Write – even when you’re tired from your day job. Put something down, you can always go back and tweak and peak it later, in fact you might find something really good in there. Also – YOU are your most important audience. The story you write should be important to YOU, not some demographic to which you are trying to appeal. Last – be patient and stay positive. Do NOT get discouraged – have faith it’ll come.
