Get to know writer Jennifer Mackinday:
1) What is your very short story about?
My very short story is about the adrenaline-fueled hope of falling in love. Those breathtaking moments when your heart clouds your mind, preventing thoughts of any other union that could bring as much happiness.
2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?
I was motivated to write this story for a friend who was married the same weekend as the contest deadline. I love short stories, especially really, really short stories. The contest intrigued me!
3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?
It’s too difficult to choose one favorite movie, because I have two. THE LONGEST DAY, because who doesn’t like a good war movie filled with amazing actors?! And GONE WITH THE WIND too many times to admit to! I love the confused and conflicted passion of the characters. And Clark Gable takes my breath away.
4) How many scripts and stories have you written?
I’ve been writing nonsense and dribble most of my life, countless short stories, and long ones, too. Last year I finished a tv pilot script, HARDWOOD, which is about a small Indiana town on the cusp of World War II. Think HOOSIERS (the movie) meets MANHATTAN (tv show).
5) What artists would you love to work with?
Kevin Alejandro, Lake Bell, Mamie Gummer, Joseph Gordon Levitt
6) What is your passion in life?
Mark Twain wrote that the two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you figure out why. My second day was the day my brother was wounded during combat operations in Iraq. Since then, I’ve become a passionate advocate for wounded service members and their families.
7) Any tips for other writers who want to write a 140 character short story?
Write without counting words, then remove everything superfluous. Get down to the skeleton of the story. If you can still make sense of it all, you’ve done it!
