WHO AM I by Aneesh Kotru
I think to myself, who am I,
So many possibilities, but to know I must try,
To descend from this throne of pride, I see myself sitting on so high,
And explore the very fabric of the words ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘why’.
Am I a problem or the solution,
Bound by certainty or just a fleeting intuition,
Am I a product on the path of absolution,
In times of reality, living as an illusion.
Could I be a time gone by, a silhouette of the past,
Within the pages of history, I am forever bound to last,
Or am I the distant future, approaching ever so fast,
Running from my earlier self into an unknown so vast.
Present is what I appear to some,
With a soul of the past but thoughts on what’s to come,
I sing for the future, for the past what I could only hum,
With the melody of time, it takes an eternity to strum.
Am I a momentary idea or thoughts for a lifetime,
A solitary note or a beautifully crafted rhyme,
Lumbering with a burden or do I dance on a dime
In all this expressionless chatter, can I stand out a mime?
Should I flow as the gentle wind of every season,
Moving silently without question or giving reason,
Or should I be a storm, impossible to contain or imprison,
Committed to defying nature in the very act of treason.
Do I emerge as the day or fade away into the night,
Light the spark of joy or drown in an ocean of plight,
To cleanse my being and to filter out all the spite,
With my body and mind, my soul must also take flight.
I may appear a solemn truth, or the root of all lies,
Hated as both I ponder severing all ties,
With the figment called life, I am starting to realize,
That I am nothing, yet everything, and that’s my only prize.
