Shot in black and white, “Jailbreak” follows the daring escape of a prisoner fleeing his cell and his quest for sweet punishment. The animated short from HouseSpecial Director Aaron Sorenson is a German Expressionist-inspired design mash-up of stop-motion and illustration with a decidedly adult twist.
Director’s Statement:
“Jailbreak” was inspired most directly by the silent German Expressionist films such as “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” and “The Golem.” But it was also inspired by my love of prison break films such as “Escape from Alcatraz,” “I Was a Prisoner on a Chain Gang,” and “Papillon.” The main character Klaus is inspired by cubism (mostly Picasso), squashing his form into something rather flattened and kind of 2.5d. The set was designed to reflect that same aesthetic.
