Get to know the winning writer:
What is your screenplay about?
“Death of a Ladies’ Man” tells the story of an amoral relationship counsellor who delights in destroying relationships. He’s also dead and narrating the final 3 years of his life from beyond the grave as he tries to ascertain who killed him and why. I wanted to write from the perspective of a loathsome, morally-bankrupt individual, who’s also so charismatic that he actually challenges the audience to like him.
What genres does your screenplay under?
The submitted script is the pilot episode of a 6-part TV Comedy-Thriller. I would say that it’s a black comedy with the character development and dense plotting of a drama as well as the excitement of a whodunit murder-mystery.
Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?
Although this has been written as a TV Series, it has a cinematic, film-noir feel to it which could conceivably translate well to a feature-length film.
How would you describe this script in two words?
Blackly comic.
What movie have you seen the most times in your life?
‘Synecdoche, New York’.
How long have you been working on this screenplay?
It’s been redrafted a few times, so just over a year in total.
How many stories have you written?
This is the first screenplay that I’ve written. However, I’m currently working on a feature, a short and two more comedy pilots.
What motivated you to write this screenplay?
I think the best comedy emanates from inherently contradictory situations and I felt that relationship counselling, which essentially depends upon the problems in people’s personal lives, would be a great starting point. I was also excited about writing from the perspective of a villain and by the challenge of inviting the audience to sympathise with him in some way.
What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?
As it’s my first screenplay, I felt a daily insecurity of whether or not I should be pursuing a career in writing at all. Therefore, the obstacles I faced were not just the constant redrafts, but my own internal insecurities.
Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
I’m also very passionate about music. I play guitar and write songs when I’m not working on screenplays.
Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?
I’m a new writer, so I wouldn’t want to overstate my expertise. However, it’s not just important to trust yourself and what you’re trying to create, but to also very carefully choose the people you place your trust in. In any create field, it’s vital to surround yourself with like-minded individuals who will inspire you and cultivate your creativity.
