The story is about how evil is the snake that eternally devours itself. True evil does not fear good, it fears its own eventual consumption and annihilation by the greater evil that its actions spawn.
Why should people know this story?
It isn’t so much vampires, zombies, or hostile aliens that truly terrify us so much as the very real and tangible horror that possibly exists right down the street from where you live or outside your very window on any given day.
