Logline: In 1619, a rowdy group of pirates rob a ship carrying 21 African servants and brings them to America. One servant Antonio Johnson works hard to become America’s first African-American freedman. He prospers, but not without trials. This is a story about Ameticans: Blacks, whites and Native Americans struggle side by side to survive slavery and build up these United States. A US Census worker meets a former slave who teaches him a valuable lesson about his surname and family values.
