Won his Tony the same year that Kelly Bishop – who portrays his wife in Gilmore Girls (2000) – won hers.

He has played Franklin D. Roosevelt three times: Eleanor and Franklin (1976), Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years (1977) and Annie (1982). In 2005, he hosted the documentary, about Roosevelt, called FDR: A Presidency Revealed (2005).
