Her first train ride. Mama promised a surprise at Union Station. “Stay here.” The girl waited on a bench. Passengers hurried by. Clomping boots, squeaky sneakers, clicking heels. A shoe symphony. Not until lights dimmed and the station emptied could she hear it. Scuffed sandals tapping her own mournful coda.
