Doing nothing is very hard to do… you never know when you’re finished.
The reason they call it ‘golf’ is that all the other four-letter words were used up.
[on the part of his career when he played almost exclusively villains] The best part is always the heavy. And the meaner and crueler and the worse you are, the more vicious you are as the heavy, the better the hero looks when he whips you. So, the heavy is liable to be a very dramatic, fine acting part. I told my agent at that time, “I want to play heavies who are really vicious and cruel and terrible. I want them to know that they’re terrible and I want them to enjoy it.”.
Born: February 9, 1943 in Newark, New Jersey, USA
[on his good friend and My Cousin Vinny (1992) co-star, the late Fred Gwynne] It takes somebody who’s very serious to pull off a character like Herman Munster [from Gwynne’s series The Munsters (1964)]. It’s not simple to play the goof. Fred was not Herman. He was an intelligent, quiet gentleman.
[On Raging Bull] I remember being asked do you think we should shoot in black and white or in color. And I said black and white without any hesitation.
[On Robert De Niro] We work so well together. It’s like breathing in and out. It’s so easy for us- we feed off each other.
[On Martin Scorsese] Marty is probably the best director I’ve ever worked with and one of the best directors of our generation and previous generations.

“I hope that they see this film as sweet and endearing, and I hope that they take away that being yourself is the most important thing, not trying to be something that you’re not. Whether that means that you’re a popular kid or a geek like the kids in the movie, being true to yourself is worth more than any money you can ever have.” – When asked what she hoped audiences would take away from watching Napoleon Dynamite. (From Venice Magazine June 2004)
“No, because I chose to have the childhood that I had. I was not pushed into the business by anything other than my own ambition and my own dream of wanting to act. And I think that even though I don’t have a bunch of cool stories about those great proms, I have great stories of my own about places that I’ve gone to that a lot of people have never gotten to go to. I’m so grateful for the experiences I’ve had. I’ve had great opportunities, and have met great people. I’m completely satisfied with how I grew up and the choices I made.” – When asked whether or not she felt that she missed out on a normal childhood. (From Venice Magazine June 2004)

[on being a Gay activist] I believe that we all have the potential to love any human being, and that genetics, upbringing, choice, social conditioning and environment play a major part in which way we sway. I believe that we all have the potential to love any human being, and that just love who you wish and celebrate it the best you can. Love is a gift. Between anyone.

[speech at the Republican National Convention, Aug. 17, 1992.] Whatever else history may say about me when I’m gone, I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears; to your confidence rather than your doubts. My dream is that you will travel the road ahead with liberty’s lamp guiding your steps and opportunity’s arm steadying your way.
I know in my heart that man is good, and that what’s right will always – eventually – triumph. And that there’s purpose and worth to each and every life.
Status quo, you know is Latin for “the mess we’re in”.
[To Warren Beatty] I don’t know how anybody can serve in public office without being an actor.

I always thought James Dean was this acting nerd like I am. He was just born with the talent to act and this vivid imagination. But the way he went about getting there was actually kind of annoying.
I like to believe that most human beings go about things with a point of view that they’re just doing what they feel like they need to do at that time. Sometimes people make bad decisions, but it’s not evil.
Comic-book movies are where my childhood fantasies meet my adulthood acting fantasies. I really, truly started acting by playing superheroes in my backyard.
