Genre: Family
Marriage Before Blood
by Mohammed Islam Butt
If any man can show just cause, why they may not lawfully be joined together, let him now speak, or else hereafter forever hold his peace.
He is talking to me.
Almost daring me to challenge the status quo.
My mouth quivers and tries to speak to save my brother not from the act of marriage.
But from himself.
The metamorphous is quicker in some and slower in others.
BUT IT WILL HAPPEN!!! My mind screams.
I will never change.
He boasts and laughs.
But they do.
Wilt thou love her, comfort her, honor, and keep her in sickness and in health?
I will. My brother replies.
I should leave and save myself from the pain that follows.
To lose someone to death is tragic.
But with time you heal and remember the good memories, trying not to dwell on the bad.
Witnessing the death of person beliefs, replaced with thoughts of only of themselves.
Sentences such as:
What about ME?
I need this!
I have MY own family now!
Did you not have a family before the new one you have spawned?
What of them?
Hearing these words that my brother speaks feel like razor sharp blades twisted slowly into my eyes. This is done as if in punishment for seeing and not doing anything.
For better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part?
I leave then knowing the happiness in this place is shot lived and from bitter experience am prepared for the arguments, the back stabbing and the sound of family bonds tearing apart.
That’s for later for my brother no longer have time for me.
Alone I walk home.
I begin to smile a chilling smile brought on by a dark thought.
Going to my brother and asking him MY own question that was not asked.
But tell me this brother and answer well. If something should happen to you beloved, who will look after you in sickness and in health? For richer or poorer?
Where will you turn when you are alone?
