My Child
by Justin Hanson

Each day you look up and see a wall so high
That you think surely no one will hear you cry
You feel like this pit is just too deep
And what’s left of your life is its to keep
You fear that in this loneliness you’ll wither and die.

You feel the walls around you quickly closing in
Ignoring that it’s caused by your own sin,
So you find yourself stuck locked in a cage
Its bars built of your own rage.

Unrelenting pain is becoming your new norm
This hurricane of hurt is your personal storm.
You are struggling, grasping for each breath
Even hoping for the release that would be death.

Day by day you fall further from my mark
Night by night you stagger through the dark.
Desperately you try to survive this fight
But fear grips you tighter each night.

But, my child, if you look past your pains
I promise that my love for you still remains.

My child, I know you have your doubt
But won’t you listen to me as I shout?
In me you will find so much more
You will no longer have to be spiritually poor.
All you have to do is open up the door.

I know that in this pit and this pain there is no end in sight
But if you call on me I will lend you my might
And when you feel like you’re cracking under all this weight,
Know that your Maker’s hands hold your fate.

My child, you are convinced that life’s only certainty is sorrow
But just remember that the sun will surely rise tomorrow
And if you ever feel as though I have forsaken you
Know that I am simply in the process of remakin you.

Sometimes you feel alone in a crowd
Like you live under a permanent personal cloud
And even if you cried out loud
Nobody would ever hear a sound.
Can I tell you that I heard you from the start?
Don’t you know that I stitched together your heart?
See, I know your story, inside and out, every part
And my child, your broken heart is the masterpiece of all of my art.

Every day you sit and stare at this cliff’s face
When you should instead be seeking after my face
You look up at the sky and scream “Is anyone even there?”
But refuse to hear my reply that I so deeply care
You choose to listen to the cry of your fear
Rather than the whispers of your King begging you to draw near.

My child, in the depths of your despair,
You feel broken beyond any repair
But don’t you know that I love you beyond compare
And on the cross I paid a real cost
So that you no longer need to feel lost
And know that even if you lose this battle,
I already won the war.

You think you can’t be fixed because of the size of your mistake
But the sacrifice to save you was one I was willing to make
I let them drive nails through my hands because I knew what was at stake
See, I went through all of this for your sake
Because your heart is one I desperately want to remake
So that it will no longer be Satan’s to take.

Down in the depths of your heart is an empty place
You think the world can fill it so you chase and you chase
But continually find yourself frustrated and annoyed
That nothing and no one can ever fill the void
My child, you spend so much time looking for something greater
When all you need can be found in your creator.

So stop looking for your identity in a mirror
Stop trying to find a purpose in your fear
Start looking for my face
And you’ll find yourself surrounded by my grace
You’ll run faster, pick up the pace
And maybe even win this race.

Forget your failures and focus on the future,
Shut down the sin and shame and seek the Savior,
Lock out the lies and you’ll locate my love.

See, my child, I am so much more real
Than all the pain and the fear that you feel
You will find all you seek if you come before me and kneel
And I guarantee that it will be treasure even Satan cannot steal.

Someday you’ll realize that each and every test
Was intricately designed to bring out only your best
And when you felt broken, abused, rejected and refused
In me you are truly whole, adopted, remade and renewed.

My child, I know you often feel buried under your sin
And at times your faith is plateauing
Seems like maybe you stopped knowing
That I made you whole with the holes in my skin.

Maybe if you felt that hole in my hand
You would wholly understand
And maybe if you used your real eyes
You would begin to realize
That you bought into some big lies
But, child, know that I can set you free
From all that holds you in bondage and captivity.

I’ll take you from prisoner to prince,
Victim to victor,
Broken to fixed,
Surviving to thriving.

My child, if you should feel the earth quake
Don’t panic, don’t let your faith shake
Know that I gave you each breath you take
And that my love for you is anything but fake.

And when you’re tempted to give in to compromise
Hold strong, look to me for the strength to rise
Against the sin that holds you down and brings you shame
The strength to overcome rests only in my name.

So don’t you dare believe those lies
That will lead only to your demise
Choose instead to give me your eyes
Make me your goal and your prize
And instead of drowning in a sea of ugly lies
I’ll let you walk with me on these beautiful skies.

My child, the devil can be really sly
And he’ll tell you that you’ll never qualify
For my freedom, but you see, your debt was paid
By the sacrifice I made
That night when I died on a tree
On a hill named Calvary
So that you may walk with me
And be set completely free.
For eternity.

My child, I love you. Come and follow me.

  1. Dear child,

    you’ve only made one mistake
that is believing i a lord
    that man had made….

So take it too the test
    believe in yourself
    and throw away all rest…..

    Man made god,
    god didn’t make man!

  2. My Child is a mirror. Those looking into it with their eyes open would see a reflection of themselves in the image of God in which they are so wonderfully made, and would embrace it.
Those looking into it with their eyes closed and in darkness, would shatter it in pieces for it is foolishness to them.
For alas, their salvation is in their own hands.

  3. All the more to let them have their creativity… You by getting old most lose their childlike creativity, therefore as the church holding back humanity…

You see child just may have the cure for cancer locked away in her mind, by leading the young child astray depending on a non-existence god… Look through your good book and see how many they burned for having a creative mind calling it heresy………………
