Poem VII
by Phakamani Khumalo
It starts with a fragrance,
I’m nowhere near you
But I can see you all over again.
Lost in the blue of sky
Between the blinding sunshine and draping curtains,
Clouded by the images lodged within the fibers of my mind
I can taste the butterflies creeping up my throat again
Which soul dare not tremble at such an aroma?
I can smell the calm of your breath evaporating along the base of my lower lip
Your pulse deepening along the skin of my shoulders, as you slightly fall into a hazy sleep.
It’s dark here,
But I can see your completion glowing like the afternoon calling upon the twilight of a premature moon
With subtle gesture that caresses my face
You’ve become the suffix of my every first breath
The profound smell of rainfall
I see the reflection of light bouncing off your eyelids
You are beautiful!
As the sun decomposing into the finer regions of the ocean’s surface
Yet the reflux of the sun’s repercussion pierces me,
With the surreal magnitude of what once burned within me
For thee,
I am lost to the counterparts of star dust
That of which dwells within the rhythm of your eye lids
The contradiction of celestial cipher that embodies love and heartache
For when my timid mind blurs upon these thoughts
I am whole again
But then I awake-
To a deafening silence
Prolonged by fantasy
Stifled by the pensive endeavors of sweet calibration
You are flamboyant, without magnitude or direction
