Get to know writer Jamison Derfler:

1. What is your screenplay about?

Ultimately, this screenplay is about the ever engaging battle of good versus evil.

2. Why should this script be made into a movie?

This script has all the criteria of a successful movie. It has believable characters that are both interesting and engaging. It has a story that continually drives the film forward and reveals its full plot in small, incremental, thought provoking twists. It is a thinkers film and by that, I mean that after watching this film, you will have questions, not just on the nuances of the script, but by the bigger picture of life and the here-after.

3. How long have you been writing stories?

I wrote my first short script around 1997, while still in high school and haven’t stopped since.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

The one film that I have watched more than any other film in my life would have to be Evil Dead II. I find the story to be fun, witty and engaging and the direction by Sam Raimi to be outstanding. I am constantly learning new techniques as a film maker and a writer from this film.

5. What artists would you love to work with?

There are so many great actors, directors, producers and artists today. I would love to work with Robert Redford, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marisa Tomei, Guy Pierce, Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Guy Ritchie, Tim Burton, Mel Gibson, Gina Davis, Steven Spielberg, Matt Damon, Christopher Walken, Emma Stone, Matt Dillon, Cameron Diaz, Steve Savage, Peter Jackson, John Cusack, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Danny Elfman and many, many others.

6. How many stories/screenplays have you written?

I’m constantly writing, so I have a plethora of material. I’ve completed three feature screenplays and have written 7 short scripts that have been made into films and have played in various film festivals. I have dozens of other scripts that are in hiatus or are being developed.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

Five years from now, I would love to be directing feature films. My main focus in life is directing, but writing has always followed at a close second. I really enjoy writing and directing my own scripts. It’s a creative process akin to raising a child, from infancy, the idea for a film, through adulthood, the premiere of said film. This process is where I strive to be.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

I don’t really have a process for writing. I write, when inspiration strikes. During those doldrums of writing, I like to listen to film scores, akin to Last of the Mohicans or The Lord of the Rings and hash out ideas and dialogue on my laptop.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am passionate about film-making, particularly directing, but all aspects intrigue me.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival?

I came across WILDsound while browsing through withoutabox.com. I had recently completed my third or fourth draft of this screenplay, God’s Will, and was looking to enter it into competitions. I saw the information about WILDsound and was attracted to the part about getting legit feedback on my script. I find it is hard to find honest, insightful feedback on screenplays and thought I would take a chance with WILDsound. After receiving my initial feedback, I was blown away. Here was honest, helpful feedback on aspects of my script that I could incorporate to improve it. This was exactly what I was hoping for. There were technical notes as well as script analysis and suggestions, all of which I was very thankful for receiving and utilized to improve my script.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

By all means send your script to WILDsound, you will be happy that you did. And most importantly, keep on writing.
