Watch MOVING ON, Twitter Short Story:
Get to know writer Sam Brandt:
1. What is your very short story about?
On the face of it, the story is about a woman who has lost her love. She is moving from their home and remembering him. The story is really bittersweet feelings. It’s bitter because he’s gone and she loved him, how long they’d lived in that house, and she used to sit on that bench with him. It’s sweet though – the memory of him, swinging, and all that time together; it fills her enough to be able to move on.
2. What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?
I saw the contest and thought, “I wonder what kind of story can you tell in 140 characters?” I love a challenge. I agree that simple can be better, but it was such a short limit. I wondered if I could convey a feeling (hell, an entire lifetime) in that span.
3. What movie have you seen the most in your life?
Movie I’ve seen the most? Oh man, I have no idea. Maybe it’s The Long Kiss Goodnight or The Craft… or a Disney movie. I’ve never really thought about it.
4. How many scripts and stories have you written?
Written? Too many to count. Finished? Not nearly enough. I am constantly telling myself stories too. I’m falling in love with oral story telling right now too.
5. What artists would you love to work with?
All my writing favorites: Patrick Rothfuss, Robin Hobb, Neil Gaiman, Peter V. Brett, and Jim Butcher. Each of them have incredible strengths in their writing, especially in world building and character building. Learning from them would be immense. Oh! And Skottie Young. His art is awesome!
6. What is your passion in life?
If it’s not obvious, my passion is for words and writing. I also have a passion for discovery, adventure, and learning what makes an individual lovable and interesting. If you let me sit down and talk (and listen) to you, I will probably fall in love with you a little bit.
7. Any tips for other writers who want to write a 140 character short
story?
Evoke a feeling and work backward. Edit it like mad. Consider each word separately.
