Watch THE DROWNING, 140 Character Short Story:
Get to know writer Catherine Bain:
1) What is your very short story about?
It’s a fanciful short think about how humans and nature interact which started with me wondering about when willows first started to weep.
2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?
I went to see a new production of Hamlet recently and was struck anew by Ophelia’s story. The idea about the watery willow came to me in the theatre and then I recalled reading earlier submissions on your website a few days earlier.
3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?
For many reasons I never tire of ‘Tess’, Roman Polanski’s version of Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy.
4) How many scripts and stories have you written?
I am a very inexperienced writer, have never written a script but enjoy mid length travel/nature writing and have been published a couple of times. I keep trying.
5) What artists would you love to work with?
I’m not quite sure what kind of artists you mean but I love the work of contemporary ‘nature’ writers such as Robert Macfarlane and Helen MacDonald so time spent learning from them has to be top of my list. I also daydream of a day working in a studio with Grayson Perry
6) What is your passion in life?
I have lots of them but top of the list is live theatre, cinema and circus.
7) Any tips for other writers who want to write a 140 character short story?
I would not consider myself experienced enough to advise anyone, I need all the help I can get but in something as short as 140 characters I love either a surprise at the end or a mind stretching link.
