The Resurrection of Yde Girl – Poetry Reading by Kathleen McCoy

Watch the Poetry Reading THE RESURRECTION OF YDE GIRL:

Poetry Read by actor Geoff Mays

1) What is the theme of your poem?

The themes of the poem are the need to confront our violent past, the historical disenfranchisement/dismemberment of women, and mortality. The subject, however, is the discovery in the late nineteenth century of a well preserved but ancient teenage corpse in a Dutch bog.

2) How would you like people to respond when they read or watch
your poetry reading?

I would like people to feel like they are discovering this garish corpse with the bog-dyed red hair–shock, and realization at how her body was treated with anything but reverence and respect. She was treated as a commodity.

3) How long have you been writing poetry?

I have been writing poetry for decades, since high school.

4) Do you have a favorite poet?

My work is influenced by many fine poets, including Jane Hirshfield, Adrienne Rich, Seamus Heaney, and others.

5) What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry
performed by a professional actor?

I appreciate the opportunity to have my work performed by a professional; poetry and performance have always been linked.

6) Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

My first full-length poetry collection, Green and Burning, is forthcoming in 2016 from WordTech. I occasionally write short fiction and nonfiction, as well as literary critique.

7) What is your passion in life?

My passions are poetry, teaching, singing, and spending time with my family.
