Get to know writer Phillip Frey:

1. What is your story about?

John Kirk wants to get out of San Pedro and leave his troublesome relationships behind. Troubles that fall by the wayside when fate throws him a curve.

Psychopath Frank Moore has found his look-alike, John Kirk, a close-enough double who will be his scapegoat. Frank switches their identities and fingerprints in government databases. He then murders his way to the cash he needs to bring his plan to fruition. A plan that will drown goodness and grace in a river of blood.

Frank Moore arrives in San Pedro. Quite the actor, he hides out with the stolen money at Kirk’s place, posing as Kirk, hair cut and dyed to match. Those close to Kirk accept Frank’s phony look-alike story, primarily because of the cash he proffers. Frank has a good time performing sex and murder—until the women in Kirk’s life bring Frank the unforeseen.

While John Kirk, thought to be Frank Moore, is on run, being pursued by those whom the cash was stolen from—pursued at the same time by a rogue police detective who wants the money for himself. A condition that will send the innocent John Kirk through 48-hours of betrayal, violence and murder—while Frank Moore will learn the meaning of “The best laid plans…”

2. Why should people know this story?

Because it is not just a crime-thriller. It is also about racism, greed, the best laid plans, and there is no place like home. There is also the psychopath’s reasoning, some of which will cause us to confront the nefarious thoughts we ourselves harbor from others.

3. This story has a lot going for it. How would you describe this story in two words?

Rollercoaster ride.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

“A Christmas Carol.” The one starring Alastair Sim as Scrooge.

5. How long have you been working on this story?

It took me about five years. For a little more than the first few years I was working a fulltime job. The only time I had to work on the book was before going to the job, for an hour-and-a-half at the most. Same with weekends, because of all the other things I had to do. In the remaining year-and-a-half, I am certain I did nearly twenty drafts to get to the final.

6. How many stories have you written?

I have a fantasy-comedy book called “Hym and Hur.” It is an 8,000-word short story. As for usual-length short stories, I have 15 of them, and currently working on a new one.

7. What motivated you to write this story?

Before I turned to prose fiction, I was a screenwriter and had always wanted to write a book. I suppose I wasn’t up to the task until later in life. “Dangerous Times” was my first attempt. I had always loved crime novels and had always wanted to write one.

8. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Movies and women.

9. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass along?

Tennessee Williams had good advice. I took it and it has worked for me. Set a daily start time, and then sit there, same time every day. It doesn’t matter how long, as long as it’s the same amount of time each day. If nothing happens on paper, it doesn’t matter. Just stare at the blank page, daydream about hot fudge sundaes, maybe even daydream about what you are trying to say on paper. The important thing is not to run from it. Whether or not a single word is written, the mind is still working. The time spent is never wasted. All you need is that first sentence. One will lead to another. Discipline has been my savior.
