Saying Goodbye to the Island

© Kim M. Russell, 2016

The sea rises

Eating away the coast

Until the village

Becomes an island ghost

Deserted

Derelict

Dangerous

Haunted by gulls

And scavengers

A watery soundscape

Of bubbles and splashes

Rumbles and crashes

Accompanies the tidal creep

While the last traces of habitation

Await the final slip into the salty deep
