The Caged Bird
by Manisha Chetia

The bird was holed up
in it’s steel cage,
locked & held back
from flying away.
The master held the key
away from freedom’s hand,
strong and protected
in an iron grip.
The bird looked up at the sun,
breathed its warm glow;
the bird raised itself,
but fell back in it’s shackles.
All the bird wanted to do
was to go and fly,
high up in the sky;
to spread its wings,
far and wide;
to go up and glide
like a free bird.
