What is the theme of your poem?

The theme of this poem is the past and the many ways it can creep back up on us, mainly when we least expect it. It portrays the past as many things (a lost friend, an old lover), but each make it difficult for the speaker of the poem to move on and let go, and they continue to struggle until the speaker finally realizes the the past is something that cannot be changed, and while it will always be there, no matter how smothering it may be.

What motivated you to write this poem?

The motivation for writing this stems from the need to go back to old, toxic habits and expecting them to have changed. To keep trapping yourself in a time or place or person that is not good for…
