Matthew Toffolo: What gave you the idea to write this very short story?

Joni Holderman: There was no idea! This is a shorter version of a story I created as a freewriting exercise in a fiction writing class. The freewriting prompt was “I remember.” It was the weirdest writing experience of my life. Usually I start with a clear idea of the plot. In this case, I had no concept of where the story was going. I simply thought of one line at a time. As I completed each one the next line came to me like it was falling out of the sky.

Dozens of stories and I’m currently writing a wacky novel called Surfside Beach.
