In the 1950s and 1960s, a young black woman leaves St. Louis after unjustly losing her reputation because of two murder incidents, becomes a nurse and civil rights activist after breaking the color barrier in an all-white university, helps end voting rights discrimination in Birmingham, Alabama and returns to St. Louis to clear her name.
