Director Statement

The Unexpected Guests started as a project for my third year advanced animation class. Our prompt was to come up with a short film of our choosing. I thought long and hard about what I should create and I finally decided on The Unexpected Guests.

The story of these two girls is very similar to my own. When I first moved from a small farm town on the outskirts of London Ontario to the big city of Toronto, I was not prepared for what I was about to encounter. I had too many stars in my eyes, and not enough street smarts in my brain. I ended up moving to a rough part of town, and my roommate and I had no idea what we got ourselves into. We dealt with scary neighbors, constant yelling and sirens, fights, bedbugs and many other things that two young girls would rather stay away from. There were many mornings where we’d wake up to caution tape around our apartment building from the night before.
After moving out and finding a safer place to live, my roommate and I often look back at our old situation and laugh at how unprepared we were for the real world. Picturing ourselves walking home in bright pink dresses, studded cowboy boots, and blonde extensions was a very interesting juxtaposition with the neighborhood we lived in.

For my film I wanted to play with stereotypes that I find are often automatically put on me, and experiment with how someone like that may have acted in my situation.
