Matthew Toffolo chatted with Johnny Mischief-Cancer, about his animated music video “Roll Call Home” for Jenny Wu’s song, which was showcased at Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film Festival. Johnny, based in Portland, Oregon, directed and animated the entire project himself, including rotoscoping and mouth movement work, though he had to take a six-month hiatus due to the sudden death of an old bandmate. The video depicts a space journey metaphor for touring as a musician, featuring alien species (crabs) and locations like Paris and Edmonton, with Johnny working remotely with Jenny who is based in Ottawa, Canada. Despite personal challenges, Johnny completed the project with support from his therapist, who helped him manage grief while working on the video.
