Matthew Toffolo interviewed Helen Winkler and her daughter Rita Winkler, where they discussed their short film “More Colorful World” about Rita’s artistic journey. Rita began painting watercolor artwork during COVID-19, starting with virtual art classes and eventually producing hundreds of paintings daily, with themes often inspired by birthdays, holidays, news events, and everyday life at her day program called Danny. Helen explained how she collaborates with Rita to develop art techniques suitable for someone with disabilities and described how Rita’s brother-in-law Mark in New York helped create the film and website to showcase her work. The discussion covered Rita’s business selling original paintings and prints, her upcoming birthday celebration coinciding with a family gathering, and her participation in an art exhibit in New York with other artists who have Down syndrome.
