Highlights from the Thursday October 20, 2016 event.

The October 2016 ACTION/CRIME Festival was a major success. The sold out crowd loved every single film.

The theme of the festival was “Remember the Red Herring”.

In these genres (action, crime, mystery) especially, the “red herring” element always appears, like they did in all the movies presented this month. The audience thinks it’s one thing who is doing bad, but it is never is the case.

Definition of a Red Herring: Something, especially a clue, that is or is intended to be misleading or distracting in a novel, TV episode, story, or movie.

All 6 films this month were standouts as every movie received multiple votes for “Best Film,” and 4 out of the 6 films received an award. That never happens at our festival as usually there is 1-2 films that receive all of the votes and win all of the awards.

To open the festival this month, I spoke to the audience about how these genres (Action/Crime) don’t garner enough attention in the short film market. How all of the films we’re presenting tonight don’t get a fair shake at festivals around the world because festivals don’t know how to program them. And it’s too bad because all six of these films deserve to be shown at every single festival in the world today. They are all that great and the audience at the festival agrees.

Documentary and Comedy generally do not mix – especially in a film festival screening. This month was a experimentation in programming. We began the festival with three excellent documentary short films that have gotten into every festival they have submitted to. And we ended on three comedy shorts that were polarizing to all.

The theme of the Documentary/Comedy Festival was “Overcoming external conflicts”.

We were excited to showcase our first FAN FICTION short film at the festival. A sequel to the Back to the Future films. This was one of those films where you had to think “4th dimensionally” as the iconic cast of Michael J. Fox and Christophr Lloyd were replaced.

We also were excited to show a “Student Film” from the United States about a Vice Principal having a bad day. We also plan to showcase more student films at our festival at our future events.

The standout films were definitely the documentary shorts. All three films received multiple votes for “Best Film” at the festival.

The SEPTEMBER 2016 Festival was a major success. There wasn’t an empty seat in the cinema and the audience was very engaged during the feedback portion of the festival. Click the posters, learn about the films, and watch the Audience Feedback Videos.

FEEDBACK TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL – Highlights from the Thursday September 20 2016 event.

The theme of the SCI-FI/FANTASY SEPTEMBER 2016 FILM FESTIVAL was:
“WHAT IS REALITY?”.

Every film showcased on the night was about characters dealing with another reality besides our own.

This was a fantastic lineup of Sci-Fi short films. I can’t remember a better lineup of films geared towards a specific genre that was better than this one. These shorts were so solid, they could have all easily played at any major festival in and around the world (and some of them have!). They were more than simply being a Sci-Fi film.

These were films that simply told an emotional tale of real human beings dealing with the circumstances and conflicts in their path. The setting just happened to be in the Science Fiction genre.

This was also the first time in over 50 festivals that one film (Uncanny Valley) swept all of the festival awards. “Uncanny Valley” is just a film that was working on all cylinders, plus had a timely theme.

That said, all of the other shorts easily would have won Best Picture at most of the past festivals.

It’s a new beginning to the FEEDBACK Film Festival at the Carlton Cinemas in downtown Toronto, Canada. Great things are coming in the 2016 season as we will be showcasing a festival now twice month!
