cupped hands
by Barry Weldon

I see you standing naked
taking everything you got
trap me within a moment
a memory I forgot
and I know you’re not returning
to argue wrong from right
it’s easy to accept forgiveness
with the gift of hindsight

I saw you this morning
in the shapes in the sky
couldn’t make out the question
but the answer was why
and you cupped your hands so tightly
held them close to my ear
pushed your lips as one so slightly
asking ” what do you hear ?”

I see you when I need to
still active behind closed eyes
the projection hasn’t aged
or otherwise been unkind
as you call me back inside
your voice has been masked
and i’m dancing amoung the shrapnel
these lonely waves have cast
