Consequence of lying, Twitter Short Story by Marcus Ako

Get to know writer Marcus Ako:

1) What is your very short story about?

CONSEQUENCE OF LYING looks at the repercussion of fibbing on a cv, something most of us have done at least once. Someone lies about being colour-blind. Now they need to diffuse a bomb.

2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?

I heard about the festival and felt the challenge to tell an entire story in 140 characters. So many ideas flooded my tiny brain but converting them into that limited space was tough. The punchline hit me first, then I worked backwards to make the story work.

3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? I have seen that movie – no lie – 50 times. I know all the songs and all the jokes and I would happily watch it again right now.

In fact, I think I will.

4) How many scripts and stories have you written?

1 script that is in Pre-production as we speak (Dark Ascension), 1 currently being optioned (Convict) and 3 that are sitting on my laptop. I have also written 10 short stories and 1 graphic novel, all unpublished.

5) What artists would you love to work with?

Idris Elba, Kevin Spacey, Olivia Coleman, Natalie Dormer, Brendan Gleeson

6) What is your passion in life?

Films and TV….

I should have said my wife and kids…

It’s okay, they won’t read this!

7) Any tips for other writers who want to write a 140 character short story?

Write out the full story. Then summarise. Then summarise the summary. Then lose all adverbs and adjectives. If you’re still not at 140 characters, then pick another story and repeat the first step…
