But He Still Has To Go Home
by Keith A. Hopps © 2002
He wakes up early,
trying to catch his dreams before they die
The good feeling warms him,
maybe today he won’t have to cry.
He leaps out of bed,
and the cold floor stuns his heart.
Nothing unusual; that’s the way his days always start.
If wishes were food,
maybe his stomach wouldn’t feel so cruel.
But why should he eat?
He’s only going to school.
He quietly gets dressed.
It’s the blue shirt this week.
It’s not that he’s poor,
she washes clothes when they reek.
He runs for the bus,
once inside he starts to sing.
Sanctuary is near . . .
A place where he can be anything.
He has no common sense,
That’s what his father tells him.
But in his books he lives.
Their unjust words can’t hurt him.
She meets him at the door,
with so much love, and affection.
Then shows him the truth,
true knowledge knows no complexion
He learns his potential, not the limits they conceive.
The secret to success; is choosing what to believe.
But now the joy is over,
his face is hard as stone,
for the bell from time tells him,
he still has to go home.
