Spring
by Patricia Ponce
Spring is coming
cruel Spring
with its promise of rebirth
and the verile
memories sure to bring
Spring that was
in that lost life
blossoming
my boys and me
Dad
on the way to see
the Dodgers play
Opening Day
In that Spring I felt
invincible
almighty Dad
the principal
larger than life
in their eyes
My body was strong
my wallet was full
my sons regarded me
as all-powerful
and all-knowing
my place in the world
was secure
Surely I was immortal
surely.
Spring that should be
bittersweet
so full of love
knowing this may be
the final Spring
Yet I stand
an unconquered man
though my body gives way
my spirit remains
radiant with love
and the joy of each moment
spent with you
I remain
and always will be
Dad
the protector
the provider
undefeated, with a legacy
of undying love.
Can you see me
in the Spring that should be
my beautiful wife
can you see
the love that pours
from every part of me
To say, “You are my eternal
love, and I will always be
your protector.
I go in peace
I go in strength
because I know that I
will always be in your heart.”
In this way
I am undefeated
So let us be together
and cherish each moment
Let us make love
and memories.
