1. What is your screenplay about?
Among Us is a tale of elves, living disguised as humans. These
long-lived elves have varying supernatural abilities, depending
on their elemental affinity (Water, Air, etc). The Light elves
use them to help people, the Dark elves, to gain power. And
sometimes, one of us humans finds out about the secret lives of
elves.
2. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?
Wonder, laughter, suspense, tragedy and sacrifice; Among Us
shows us our world through different eyes. Struggling to fit in,
to make wise choices, to love and to live, elves bring a very
human experience to the screen.
3. How would you describe this story in one sentence?
In short: Disguised as humans, gifted elves, some good, some
evil; live, battle and love among us.
4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?
My love of fantasy stems in part from my favourite movie, The
Princess Bride, which I have enjoyed countless times and can
recite joyously word for word when watching it.
5. How long have you been working on this screenplay?
I’ve been working on Among Us for at least eight years. I have
ten other screenplays, but none as close to my passion for
fantasy, character and comedy as Among Us. I’ve felt for a long
time that people would love a story based around elven lore and
finally began creating a world where it was true.
6. What motivated you to write this screenplay?
As a single, working mom, time and energy are often in short
supply, but my love of storytelling and this particular story
wouldn’t let me stop trying to improve Among Us. I want to bring
others the joy I feel when I’m inside the story.
7. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
My other passions include dancing, reading, painting, animals,
children, the environment and watching sci fi and fantasy.
8. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?
I was excited to enter the Wildsound contest because it included
feedback and I like being able to support any film related
industry based here in Canada. The feedback from Wildsound has
helped me to improve my screenplay, whilst remaining kind in
pointing out the flaws. It’s hard to objective about your own
work, and having a fresh perspective is vital to perfecting
one’s story.
9. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?
I recommend to any aspiring writers that if they
have a story they’re burning to share, that they write it, and
rewrite it, until it’s produced. Because maybe the reason you
burn so much to tell the story, is that the rest of us need to
hear it.
