Watch the Short Script Reading ASCENT:
NARRATOR – Holly Sarchfield
Get to know writer Brough Hansen:
1. What is your short screenplay about?
Ascent follows the life of a little girl as she grows up and becomes a great inventor.
2. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?
It may be a bit cliché, but I do believe that to move forward in life we must first look backwards. At its best this idea can not only lead to closure, but to a realization of our greatest potential. I think that done well Ascent and stories like it have the power to inspire someone to reflect on his or her life and discover the beginning of some new, surprising creation of their own.
3. How would you describe this story in two words?
Infinite and infinitesimal.
4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?
Probably Pulp Fiction.
5. How long have you been working on this screenplay?
I wrote it over a couple of weeks.
6. How many stories have you written?
About a dozen plays and screenplays of every variety of length and genre (and quality).
7. What motivated you to write this screenplay?
A friend of mine wrote a screenplay for a competition and the prompt was ‘innovation.’ The theme got me thinking and led to the idea for Ascent, which excited me enough that I wanted to see it realized on the page.
8. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?
Oh, the usual. Other projects and work. My cat sometimes scratches my office door and meows needily.
9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
Acting, painting, reading, history, philosophy, and theater. I also collect propaganda posters– as great examples of dynamic, complex storytelling– and have a soft spot for the Denver Broncos.
10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?
I was interested in getting feedback from a third party that I’d never met. I thought the feedback was great– spot on and helpful.
11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?
Figure out what environment and set of circumstances you need to make your best work, then organize your entire life around approximating those conditions as precisely and consistently as possible.
