Watch 140 Character Short Story: A FINAL EFFORT OF GOODNESS
Get to know writer MJ Brewer:
1) What is your very short story about?
My story is about those times when we struggle to help someone else and the efforts are futile.
2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?
I’ve never written anything this short before, and I felt it would be fun. It was fun, but it was a bigger challenge than I had anticipated. The ability to write,
explain, and evoke emotion in an extremely short frame is more taxing than one might typically assume.
3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?
I’m unclear of this question, but I believe you’re asking the types of movies I typically watch. Sometimes when my emotions become flat-lined, I’ll watch The
Notebook or P.S. I Love You. But that is a rare occasion. Typically I like movies that instill a sense of wonder, so in order to thoroughly enjoy the film, one
must remain on their toes by investing thought. And then I love exciting sci-fi like dystopian tales or action-packed James Bond thrillers.
4) How many scripts and stories have you written?
That’s an awesome question. I have no answer for you. I couldn’t even tell you the number I’d written in school. But I will tell you the reason I became a
film writer was because I was writing for a paper when the first year anniversary of the Columbine shooting spurred them into asking me for an article. In my
research, I discovered an unknown tragedy that occurred years ago where a school was flattened by one of the workers. I wrote a full feature film, having no
idea what I was doing, and he came to my house to give me advice. He suggested I NOT go to film school, but after several rewrites, I grew impatient and
applied. I graduated on my 49th birthday last September 4, 2015. Once I get the nuts and bolts screwed down hard by writing a successful screenplay, I’ll go
back to the drawing board on this screenplay. The message is a powerful one.
5) What artists would you love to work with?
Any artist that would work with me on a set is more than welcome, as I feel s/he can’t possibly be doing it for the money. That’s the type of artist I want to
work with — the type that’s genuine enough to share in my message as an artist.
6) What is your passion in life?
Inspiring positive change. Most times change comes from simply stopping to realize the affects of what I’ve done caused a reaction, and then deciding
whether or not I would like to repeat the action for more change, or make another decision. This is what I hope people understand and take away from
every single work I produce.
7) Any tips for other writers who want to write a 140 character short
story?
My advice to anyone wanting to write a 140 character story is to ensure, as in any story, there is a cause and effect included, as well as an emotional pull. If
these three elements are in place and causes an actual picture’s creation in your mind, it’s probably good enough to submit.
