July 24, 2016 – Writing Festival Details

This week’s writing festival is a showcase of the winning Stage Play, the TV Pilot and Spec Screenplay winners, the winning Fan Fiction screenplay, plus 8 winning short screenplays.

They will be performed by some of the top actors working in Toronto today.

Here are the details of the screenplays and stage play being performed:

#1 – Stage Play – TWO MERCHANTS OF VENICE by Stephen M. Hunt

Genre: History, Drama

A radical adaptation of The Merchant of Venice that in the main rearranges Shakespeare’s text to turn the main themes on their head and to tell a very different story for 21st century audiences.

#2 – TV SPEC – RICK & MORTY  “The Rickgotiator” by David Cryan

Genre: Comedy, Animation

When Morty accidentally gets his family kidnapped while trying to stop an alien war, he and Rick must execute an elaborate plan to rescue their family and trick the aliens into calling a truce.

#3 – TV PILOT: Digital Natives, by Adam Preston

Genre: Comedy, Sitcom

When it all goes wrong for Phil Burrows he moves to London’s trendy Shoreditch district to reinvent himself as an on-the-pulse hipster in the place where it’s all happening. Not so hip or on-the-pulse is the fact that this involves moving in with his gran, Alice, who has lived there since year dot. To his horror Phil finds that a strange, vain, deluded twentysomething vlogger has wormed his way into her affections and now occupies the spare room. But horror turns to hope – could the technologically savvy Sam Fazackalee hold the secrets to his success?

#4 – Fan Fiction: The Mask of Leia by Ian Wilson

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Following the Battle of Endor and the defeat of the Empire, Leia secretly struggles with her own ongoing internal battle with the Force.

#5 – Short Screenplay: If I Die by Jean Nicole Rivers

Genre: Thriller

While out shopping garage sales, Jaime finds more than what she bargained for.

#6 – Short Screenplay:  Delta Selection by Martin Smith

Genre- Action/Adventure
A soldier decides to pursue special operations as a career path.  This is the story of what it takes to be a highly elite soldier capable of responding to difficult missions at a moment’s notice.

#7 – Short Screenplay: Please Hold by Tricia Stewart Shiu

Genre: Comedy, Drama

Underdog Hollywood Executive Assistant battles big budget boss and receives miraculous aid from an unlikely source—a shrine to Mary Tyler Moore.

#8 – Short Screenplay: True Regret by Matt Kasper

Genre: Drama

A man’s last few moments on earth, before meeting his fate.

#9 – Short Screenplay: Desperate Crossing by Thomas Thorpe

Genre: Historical Thriller

Three sisters are stranded on the coast of Russia. Separated from their husbands, they encounter escaped convicts from the Siberian Gulag.

#10 – Short Screenplay: Drac’s Cafe by Scot Walker

Genre: Fantasy, Comedy

Dracula, Political Correctness and Greenwich Village.

#11 – Short Screenplay: Julie & Rom by Behzad Sedghi

Genre: Action/Comedy

Love sparks between Rom and Julie high up in the sky. But mechanical malfunctions are bringing them down fast. Can love beat gravity?

#12 – Short Screenplay: Vestiges of a Life by Christopher Willis

Genre: Drama

The pivotal moment of change in the life of one woman.
