Podcast: EP. 1886: Filmmaker Damon Cox (MAMAS BOY)

Matthew Toffolo chatted with Damon Cox about his short film “Mama’s Boy,” which played at the Thriller Suspense Festival. Damon discussed collaborating with writer Noam Rabinovich and credited his film education at Niagara College, specifically professors Andrew Stevenson, Greg Darling, and Elias Petrus, for building his foundation. He described his career path from Southern Ontario to Quebec and finally to Ottawa, where he built his core crew. Damon explained the film’s 70s-inspired color palette, the use of a cooler tone for flashbacks, and the efficient one-day shoot. He praised the work of cinematographer Jesse Pelangio and lead actress Mary Spencer, noting her ability to balance a surreal tone without becoming campy. He also mentioned that the location was volunteered by Stephanie Lalonde and that the set decoration was largely organic, with some paintings added by Damon and his brother. Finally, Damon shared that he is currently in post-production on a documentary called “Hardway” and has other narrative short and feature projects in development.
