Podcast: EP. 1887: Screenwriter Kate Phillips (GREY AREAS)

Matthew Toffolo interviewed Kate Phillips, discussing her winning TV pilot “Gray Areas” from the Horror Festival, which tells the story of Sylvie, a neurosurgeon who becomes a zombie after being bitten by a zombie badger and uses her newfound abilities to take down powerful criminals who have harmed women. Kate explained that the idea came from a real case in New Zealand where young men got away with serious crimes against girls, inspiring her to create a character who seeks justice when the system fails. She described the script as a genre-bending mix of horror, thriller, and comedy that draws inspiration from Dexter but aims to be morally complex rather than morally sketchy. Kate shared that she’s currently based in London after moving from New Zealand two years ago and is working on her fourth script while collaborating on a feature film with another writer. She expressed interest in developing co-productions between New Zealand, the UK, and other countries and discussed her writing process of working on one script at a time while letting her subconscious work on challenging parts.
