A Desperate Solace
by Ava Oparadike

A long drawn night of mystery
made worse by my drunken search for light
if only it would not all end in misery
but alas it is all for naught.

I sing but only hear a hoax whisper,
a lovely voice once now gone with drink.
Do you believe in magic? I simper,
the voices rise all in answer.

In a strange land, a far cry from home
a familiar scene all but known
by the corner store the young men roam
their wives dejected and drawn
waiting for their lover’s return.

Why do we torment ourselves so?
I wish for the best and get it
then destroy it with my two hands
desperate to stop seeking the hit.

You could surprise me with your voice
But what would you sing that I haven’t heard?
I was once the audience’s choice
Raptured by the melodies I made

Silence, now my only solace
It would pay me to forget it all
In a bid to leave this godforsaken place
I wish to bare it all and let it fall

The voices are back bidding me
why can’t they ever stop?
The clear golden liquid beckons
Just a sip will do for now.

The excesses are all I have grown to know
You do it all or don’t even try
I once believed in immortality
But now, the constant pain just shuts out my cry

What is life that I haven’t lived!
Who am I that I haven’t been!
Grown like the oak from a little seed
now waiting to be cut down like I have never been

They say you choose the life you wish
But I don’t buy that, life happens.
If I could choose, why this anguish?
A beaver of dreams now barren
