Happy Birthday: Aaliyah (1979–2001)

aaliyah.jpgAaliyah (1979–2001)

Born: January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA
Died: August 25, 2001 (age 22) in Marsh Harbour, Abaco Island, Bahamas

[on her inspirations]: Sade. How beautiful is she? I chose her because I idolize her. I’ve always looked up to her. She and I have the same birthday which is January 16th so I feel like she is my soul sister. What I love about Sade is that she stays true to her style no matter what. She can leave us for 8 years and come back and be absolutely mind blowing. And you gotta respect that.

Being female, you’re raised to be a good, sweet girl and not flip out. So I had to give myself permission to be mean and evil. It’s tough. But I’ve always been drawn to the darker side of things.

[on Frank Ocean] You talk to some people in this business and you get the sense that they’re very focused on radio: what will be a hit or won’t be a hit. You never get that from Frank. The focus is on creating something that’s beautiful, that’s great art…I think Frank’s career will be defined by his fearlessness and his artistic freedom.

I am a feminist. Women are discriminated against in so many ways and they make up half the population.

Happy Birthday: Eddie Vedder

(about the song “Jeremy”) It came from a small paragraph in a paper which means you kill yourself and you make a big old sacrifice and try to get your revenge. That all you’re gonna end up with is a paragraph in a newspaper. Sixty-three degrees and cloudy in a suburban neighborhood. That’s the beginning of the video and that’s the same thing is that in the end, it does nothing … nothing changes. The world goes on and you’re gone. The best revenge is to live on and prove yourself. Be stronger than those people. And then you can come back.

Happy Birthday: Sia

Born: December 18, 1975 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia

Married to: Erik Anders Lang (2 August 2014 – present) (separated)

I don’t go to shows because I just want to listen to the music performed live. I want to get to know the person who’s performing it. Or I want to, like, take away a sense that I had an experience that nobody else is going to have again, or a unique experience for that moment.

I have social anxiety. It’s easier up on stage because there’s security in being there. When I’m off stage I’m trying not to be a manic freak. I’m quite shy.

People call me for the ballads. Apparently that’s where I’ve been pigeonholed. But it’s really interesting and really fun. It’s my favourite part of the job, writing.

Happy Birthday: Frank Sinatra (1915–1998)

franksinatra.jpgFrank Sinatra (1915–1998)

Born: December 12, 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
Died: May 14, 1998 (age 82) in Los Angeles, California, USA

Married to:
Barbara Marx (11 July 1976 – 14 May 1998) (his death)
Mia Farrow (19 July 1966 – 16 August 1968) (divorced)
Ava Gardner (7 November 1951 – 5 July 1957) (divorced)
Nancy Barbato (4 February 1939 – 29 October 1951) (divorced) (3 children)

[after the deaths of Sammy Davis Jr., Ava Gardner, Jilly Rizzo and Dean Martin] I’m next. I ain’t scared, either. Everybody I ever knew is already over there.

[on Elvis Presley in 1957] Sung, played and written for the most part by cretinous goons; and by means of its almost imbecilic reiterations and sly, lewd – in plain fact, dirty – lyrics it manages to be the martial music of every sideburned delinquent on the face of the Earth. This rancid-smelling aphrodisiac I deplore. His kind of music is deplorable, a rancid smelling aphrodisiac . . . it fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people.

[on Ava Gardner] I love her, and God damn me for it.

You better get busy living, because dying’s a pain in the ass.

Happy Birthday: Mo’Nique

Born: December 11, 1967 in Woodlawn, Maryland, USA

Married to: Sidney Hicks (20 May 2006 – present) (2 children)

I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics. I want to thank Miss Hattie McDaniel for enduring all that she had to so that I would not have to. Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey because you touched it, the whole world saw it. Ricky Anderson, our attorney of Anderson & Smith, thank you for your hard work. My entire BET family, my Precious family, thank you so much. To my amazing husband Sidney, thank you for showing me that sometimes you have to forego doing what’s popular in order to do what’s right. And baby, you were so right. God bless us all. [Academy Award acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress for Precious (2009)]
