Get to know writer Alex Dzialo:

1) What is your very short story about?

My story is about genuinely trying to do your best, but being held back by your own misunderstanding.

2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?

When I came across the festival, I was interested in the challenge it provide in writing microfiction. To create a character with depth and whose personality would be the source of his own struggles in under 140 characters was an interesting exercise in writing efficiently and with subtext.

3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Shaun of the Dead! The best movie there is when it comes to zombie-filled romantic comedies, and protagonists who are endearing losers.

4) How many scripts and stories have you written?

I’ve written 8-10 scripts for short films and numerous video sketches, and am hoping to complete a feature-length script sometime this year.

5) What artists would you love to work with?

Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost are inspirations for creating excellent comedy that doesn’t skimp on cinematic quality, storytelling, and character pathos. I’d also just love to get a beer with them and talk about sci-fi. I’d also love to work with Louie C.K, who is probably both the funniest and most sincerely humane presence on television right now. Finally, I feel like even just being in a room with Paul Thomas Anderson might let me soak up some of his virtuosic talent.

6) What is your passion in life?

My passion is comedy, which I believe is the best tool we have for subverting self-important authority, coping with the absurd frustrations of day-to-day existence, and revealing the silly intimacies of life. I think comedy is unique for being both a genre and a medium, which can be employed in literature, film, theatre, etc, or even as its own entity.

I also love a good indie rock concert and late night nachos.

7) Any tips for other writers who want to write a 140 character short story?

Focus on the character. From their personality traits and beliefs will arise the story and conflict.
