Promise Land by Matasha Lee
Free birds fly,
Caged birds sing,
I’m on the journey to what was promised to me.
I’ve had my moments where I only had a song,
Wishing just to be free,
But not knowing when that day will come.
Hope, I whispered too.
Peace, I sought.
Somewhere over the rainbow,
My voice trembled to sing,
I still stayed caged with faith
Until I couldn’t take the fact that my wings no longer moved.
I was stiffened by life.
And my heart refused to create a melody with my voice,
So, often times, it cracked.
I had to do something to get my freedom back.
Day by day I shook my cage,
And told myself, I must be free.
Day by day
I need this chance
I’m so ready.
I thought about what it would be like to be out of the cage,
Until one day the opportunity came my way,
My rattling paid off,
The cage tipped over and I was free.
I tried to fly but my wings weren’t ready
I kept trying
Pressing towards the mark of freedom
At last, my wings opened wide,
I didn’t look back to ask why
I took off heading towards my promise land
Without a regret in sight.
