Get to know winning writers Monte Light & Cooper Holmes:

1. What is your screenplay about?

It’s a surreal crime thriller about three Las Vegas college students saddled with crippling debt. They break some laws, raise havoc. But when their friend overdoses on drugs, they take it on themselves to pay his out-of-control medical bills, which means they have to rob a very ruthless bank. Finally they must seek revenge against a manipulative drug dealer.

2. Why should this script be made into a movie?

Student debt, rising medical costs, bank foreclosures, lack of jobs for young people. Sadly, these things aren’t going away any time soon. We wanted to address these important issues through genre storytelling, in particular a heist film.

3. How long have you been writing stories?

Feels like Cooper and I started writing stories when we were born. We started writing stories together when we were teenagers. Cooper even chased that passion all the way to Chapman University.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Band of Outsiders was a HUGE influence on this script. Also Fargo changed our lives… And Cooper is working on a film grammar 101, shot-by-shot breakdown of Princess Mononoke as we speak… We’re obsessive like that.

5. What artists would you love to work with?

So many people, living and dead, that inspire us. Hayao Miyazaki, Jimmy Stewart, Gregg Toland, Luciano Tivoli… Even fine artists like El Greco, Magritte, and Jack “The King” Kirby.

6. How many stories/screenplays have you written?

Between us we’ve written half a dozen, if you count comics and movies and brain storms.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

We would love to be realizing all the fantasies we’ve had about deep, meaningful cinema in the States — something it seems you have to work hard to find.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

We love to write fast. We bullpen ideas quickly, (be it emails, texts, smoke breaks, etc).

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Cooper loves drawing and he’s a master at it. I enjoy painting… And I am not.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival?

We’ve submitted other work to you guys in the past and always received insightful notes / a lot of love. You’re our brass ring!

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Writing is rewriting. If there’s one cliché you should always practice, it’s that one.
